AISFP 132 – Timothy Zahn

THE TOME OF THE UNDERGATES has been recovered, and the gates of hell remain closed. Lenk and his five companions set sail to bring the accursed relic away from the demonic reach of Ulbecetonth, the Kraken Queen. But after weeks at sea, tensions amidst the adventurers are rising. Their troubles are only beginning when their ship crashes upon an island made of the bones left behind from a war long dead.

BLACK HALO is the second novel from the breakout fantasy sensation, Sam Sykes. Don’t miss this title from the author praised by John Scalzi, who said, “I do not wish Sam Sykes dead.” Oh, and when you buy your copy of BLACK HALO, please contact Sam on his website and tell him Adventures in Scifi Publishing sent you!

Show Notes

In 1992 Timothy Zahn penned HEIR TO THE EMPIRE, the first of a STAR WARS trilogy that would set the market for an expanded Star Wars universe. Now, with over 140 Star Wars novels in print and a new one hitting shelves seemingly every month, Tim joins us to discuss his latest venture into the Star Wars universe, CHOICES OF ONE. In the interview, Tim recounts how his journey writing Star Wars began and we delve into CHOICES OF ONE, discussing Han Solo’s decision to commit to the Rebellion, the development and creation of Gilead Pallaeon, and whether or not Mara Jade will be the character he is most known for from all his writing.

Brent and Shaun discuss the NPR Top 100 Science Fiction and Fantasy Books of all time list. We debate the placement of titles, the presence of others, and the absence of authors who should be on the list. Also, we present some of NPR’s disclaimers concerning the list.

What titles do you think are missing from the list? What titles should not be on the list? Who did we forget in our discussion?

  1. Last night was actually my first Decemberists show. 😛

Cool thing. My wife and I sneaked into the dressing room area after the show and talked to the band. I talked to the bassist, Nate Query, and learned how I can send them some copies of my book. It’s pretty cool, because I’ve been wanting to send them copies for awhile now (since one of their albums was a huge inspiration to me).

  2. So, I forgot to say, I think I still qualify as a groupie. Haha.

  3. Tim shared some great advice for new writers (like me)…I think he was spot-on when he mentioned the benefits of getting a “mark of approval” from a publisher or larger imprint. Though it may take longer to become published, that’s the route I am choosing to take.

    Same here, M.E., . . . for now!

I do not read as much as I should, but I wanted to support the Codex Alera series by Jim Butcher. It was mentioned as a surprise for the NPR top 100.

I have read a few of the wheel of time novels, a few of the Game of Thrones, Lord of the Rings and some of the other on the top 100, so its not like I am unaware of other novels, but I have not read many of them. So my opinion does come w/out knowing what all of the books on the list have to offer, but the Alera series for me was fast paced and highly entertaining. I can’t say it is not w/out flaws, but I just flat out enjoyed it.

For me, inclusion on the top 100 is well deserved for Codex Alrea.

  6. Shaun Farrell says

John: I have heard many good things about those books since we recorded. They have made it to my “need to read” list.
