AISFP 137 – Lou Anders

This episode is brought to you by MAYAN DECEMBER, the exciting new science fiction novel from Brenda Cooper.

Dr. Alice Cameron is a famous scientist devoted to studying ancient Mayan culture. In December 2012 she finds herself on the Yucatan Peninsula with her daughter, Nixie, fellow scholars, end of the world crazies, and even the President of the United States. It all sounds wonderful until Nixie disappears into the past. Featuring a handsome dreadlocked time-traveler, an ancient shamam, a high ranking Mayan couple, a computer nerd, and an eleven year old child, Alice must traverse the past in a search for the meaning of life and a way to save two worlds.

Show Notes:

  • One of our favorite guests, the always gracious Lou Anders, Editorial Director of Pyr books, sat down with Shaun at WorldCon the morning of the Hugo Awards. If you’ve been living in a cave. . . . Lou won. We discuss Lou’s passion for great stories, his theater background, how to pitch to an editor, how NOT to pitch to an editor, BLACKDOG, by K. V. Johansen, the thrill of discovering new writers, the true purpose of form rejection letters, the tumultuous publishing industry, including changes at Barnes and Noble, and major publishers being lazy with their ebooks! And they are. Shaun has a Nook now, and he has discovered this to be true.
  • Also, Moses, Brent, and Shaun geek out over Battlestar Galactica, DragonCon, Lou Anders’ “serious photo face,” the Gaiman-effect on the World Fantasy Convention, and parties where the only wardrobe is body paint.
  • Book of the Week: STAR WARS: HOW TO SPEAK WOOKIE: A MANUAL FOR INTERGALACTIC COMMUNICATION. Click on the image to check it out.

  1. I love the horn for the curse word. LOL!

  2. Some of us DO spend our fortunes on your books, Lou. Your skills at getting readers excited for your authors’ works are a pretty good part of that…

  3. Great show, guys, as always. I love when you have Lou on. I’m particularly interested in the personal project of Lou’s that Shaun teased at the end. Could it be another anthology of sword and sorcery? Holy crap, I hope so! Even better, a novel he has written? That would be awesome.

You guys rock, and for the record, I was not stalking Lou at Worldcon… just desperately wanting to talk to him. I think the sun was in my eyes in that picture, Shaun!

I picked up Blackdog a couple of days ago. I’ve been waiting impatiently ever since Lou talked about it in Reno. It’s very engaging so far. Pyr is going to take over the world.

  4. I can’t remember if this was the episode where you guys said to send in your best wookie impression. Are you still doing that as a contest to get The Worker Prince? I’d hate for all my practice at work asking people for their driver’s license in wookie isn’t going to waste 😉
